I love this. I was having a heck of a time getting one step to work, though. Once I've drawn my lines and expanded the whole thing, I wasn't getting the right result when I merged everything. I'm no slouch with Illustrator, but I kept getting something like I'm showing in my attachment.
Anyways, I finally figured a way around it and made my own tutorial video so my students could make this in our Fab Lab (they do better with narration). Anyways, I wanted to share the video with you:
